Thomas Edison - addled child

One Day Thomas Edison Came home and gave a paper to his mother. He told her, “My teacher gave this paper to me, and told me to only give it to my mother”.
His mother’s eyes were tearful as she read out the letter aloud to her son : Your child is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have enough good teachers for training him. Please teach him yourself.
Many years after Edison’s mother died and he was one of the greatest inventors of the century, one day he was looking through the old family things. Suddenly he saw the folded paper in the corner of the drawer in a desk. He took it and opened it up. On the paper it was written: Your son is addled (mentally ill). We won’t let him come to school any more.

Edison cried for hours and then wrote in his diary: “Thomas Alva Adison was an addled child that, by the hero mother, became the genius of the century”

Customs official Ira Singhal becomes first physically-handicapped woman to top civil services exam
Posted by Ila Choudhary
New Delhi: Customs official Ira Singhal became the first physically-handicapped woman to top the civil services examination.

Assistant Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise, Ira Singhal got first rank in Civil Services examination.
Assistant Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise, Ira Singhal got first rank in Civil Services examination.

Women candidates have bagged all the three top slots in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination in this year.
Ira has topped the examination followed by Renu Raj and Nidhi Gupta, who have secured second and third positions respectively, according to the results announced by the UPSC on Saturday.

Ira and Nidhi, who hail from Delhi, are Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise) officers whereas, Renu Raj is a doctor by profession. She hails from Kerala.

“I am really very happy. I can’t believe this. I just prepared for the examination,” Ira said.

“I want to be an IAS officer. I want to do something for the benefit of physically challenged people,” she said.

The 29-year-old, who topped the examination in the general category despite being physically challenged, said she was “shocked and surprised” by her success. She said she had never allowed her disability to come in the way of pursuing her dreams.

Ira, who suffers from scoliosis or curvature of the spine, said her physical condition was never a concern for her.

“I suffer from scoliosis due to which my spine is curved. But my physical condition has never deterred me from pursuing my dreams,” she said.

Ira, an engineer from Delhi’s NSIT (Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology) and an MBA from FMS, had cleared the civil services examination in 2010 earlier and she was allotted to Indian Revenue Service but first the revenue department refused to give her a posting, and once it agreed, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) refused to give postings.

Both department finally agreed to post her as Indian Revenue Service officer in 2014.

Ira and Nidhi are currently posted as assistant commissioners in the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise).

New Delhi:

Singhal Cleared Test Thrice, Was Denied Posting

While the glass ceiling in the civil services was broken long ago, it was resoundingly shattered on Saturday when women secured the top four positions in the Union Pu blic Service Commission (UPSC) examination 2014, with the No 1 rank-holder, Ira Singhal, also being a differently abled achiever, which is a first.

Delhi has a big reason to celebrate as three of the top five in the merit list are residents, while another is an alumnus of a top city school.

What would be particularly satisfying for Ira, who is af flicted by a spine-related disorder called Noonan syndrome, is that she thrice cracked the exams in 2010, 2011 and 2013, only to be denied a posting by the department of personnel and training (DoPT) in view of her “disability“, which was evaluated at 62%.

Ira's appeal was finally upheld by the Central Administrative Tribunal in Febru ary 2014, but even then she got her posting in the lower-inladder Indian Revenue Service in December 2014. Union Public Service Commission topper Ira Singhal said her repeated attempts at clearing the civil services were “never to prove a point against being denied the posting due to my physical disability , but to prove my desire to work for the country“.

Speaking to TOI from Hyderabad, Ira said, “I'd really like to work towards making our society more inclusive for persons with disability . Disability cannot be a handicap to our ability to perform, but our attitude to PWD can demoralize them.India's growth story lies in inclusiveness.“

An MBA graduate from FMS, Delhi University , Ira chose civil services over multinational companies, where she had worked earlier at much higher perks and sala ry. “Working for the country is the biggest perk.“ The ranking order reads Ira Singhal, Renu Raj, Nidhi Gupta, Vandana Rao, followed by Suhar sha Bhagat, who sportingly claims that he is still the top , ranker among males. In all, 1,236 candidates have been recommended for appointment to IAS, IPS, IFS and other top services.

The successful candidates were congratulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.“My best wishes as you begin the journey to serve the nation,“ he tweeted.

Minister of state for personnel Jitendra Singh is expected to felicitate the top 10 rank-holders on Monday.

So, disability of any kind is not a hurdle.

simple mathematics

As today is National Mathematics Day (BD of Ramanujan),
See this Absolutely amazing Mathematics !

1 x 8 + 1 = 9
12 x 8 + 2 = 98
123 x 8 + 3 = 987
1234 x 8 + 4 = 9876
12345 x 8 + 5 = 98765
123456 x 8 + 6 = 987654
1234567 x 8 + 7 = 9876543
12345678 x 8 + 8 = 98765432
123456789 x 8 + 9 = 987654321

1 x 9 + 2 = 11
12 x 9 + 3 = 111
123 x 9 + 4 = 1111
1234 x 9 + 5 = 11111
12345 x 9 + 6 = 111111
123456 x 9 + 7 = 1111111
1234567 x 9 + 8 = 11111111
12345678 x 9 + 9 = 111111111
123456789 x 9 +10= 1111111111

9 x 9 + 7 = 88
98 x 9 + 6 = 888
987 x 9 + 5 = 8888
9876 x 9 + 4 = 88888
98765 x 9 + 3 = 888888
987654 x 9 + 2 = 8888888
9876543 x 9 + 1 = 88888888
98765432 x 9 + 0 = 888888888

Brilliant, isn't it?

And look at this symmetry :
1 x 1 = 1
11 x 11 = 121
111 x 111 = 12321
1111 x 1111 = 1234321
11111 x 11111 = 123454321
111111 x 111111 = 12345654321
1111111 x 1111111 = 1234567654321
11111111 x 11111111 = 123456787654321
111111111 x 111111111 = 12345678987654321

Brilliant,
Happy National Mathematics Day.

Remember the ‘good’ old Indian school punishments? Holding the earlobes with arms crossed over your chests, bending the knees and then sit and then stand and so on till the time Masterji is saying? This form of punishment has been in practice in our country since the Gurukul time and was given to the students who were weak in studies. Talking about the logic behind this punishment, it is very interesting to know that this particular posture increases the blood flow in the memory cells in brain and synchronizes the right and left side of the brain to improve function and promote calmness, stimulates neural pathways via acupressure points in the earlobe, sharpens intelligence and also helps those with autism, asperger’s syndrome, learning difficulties and behavioral problems. Probably we have forgotten this ancient method of increasing memory power but the West is now using is very diligently and they are recommending this posture or exercise to treat many a diseases.
