School for learning difficulty children

Saraswathi Kendra is to recognise, understand and establish innovative and comprehensive services geared to the special needs of children with learning problems and disabilities, autism, dyslexia, so that they may learn to cope with their studies and general development. Any child whose life is disturbed by problems that interfere with school performance and inter-personal relationships can be helped.

It has Dyslexia laboratory which is a reading/writing practice room, housing a series of activities to assess and develop fine motor co-ordination, eye-hand co-ordination, letter recognition and formation. Basic reading and writing can be well established through special activities, which will take the form of play and games, encouraging the child to have fun while learning to read and write. Many children from this group are integrated into mainstream schools.

Special Education Needs (SEN) provided at Indus Early Learning Centre.

http://www.indusearlyyears.com/children.asp

At Indus, they plan for every child's learning requirements, including those with Special Educational Needs(SEN). The focus is on eliminating barriers for children, which prevents them from achieving their normal milestones. Effective strategies to meet these needs, in the form of Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) are used in school. Where required, they work with specialists from other agencies to support the child. They do not discriminate between children and aim to include everychild, by providing equal opportunities for all.

Learning Support for the children with special needs at International School of Hyderabad.

http://www.ishyd.org/cms-learning-support.html

It is the policy of the school to accommodate special needs students, within the limits of the school’s facilities, resources and expertise. Students with special needs who are admitted to the International School of Hyderabad must be able to function within the regular classroom programme with assistance from our Student Support Services.
Where this is not the case the school will ask the parents of the respective children to provide some additional expertise to support the learning process of the child.
The International School of Hyderabad (ISH) believes that all children, including those with exceptional needs and gifts, can be educated in accordance with their special needs and to the best of their abilities. The small class sizes at ISH are very conducive to support and address these needs within the classroom environment. ISH endorses the principle that “each student can achieve his or her full potential and the school’s services for students with different needs are conducted on the basis of this principle. ISH defines different needs, or special needs, as difficulties or exceptional gifts in the areas of listening, thinking, speaking, reading, writing, spelling, and/or computing, as well as in the social, emotional, or behavioural domains. The school recognizes that students with different needs may require different teaching or management methods. Students enter the programme through a referral process. Depending on the circumstances, this support can be either within the classroom environment or through a withdrawal programme.

I really appreciate the facility provided by the school authorities.

Slow Learners School Manu Prem School at Mumbai.

Manu Prem School, established by Mrs. Smita Mehta in 1983, caters exclusively to children with special educational needs.  Manu Prem has completed 25 years of selfless service in 2009.

Usually, people regard special schools as those for the mentally challenged or for children with physical or sensory handicaps. However, what many fail to realize is that special schools are also for children who have ‘invisible’ handicaps such as learning disabilities. Manu Prem caters to children with varied levels of learning difficulties. This includes children who are dyslexic, slow learners and those having ADD (attention deficit disorder), ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and other behavioural and emotional problems.
Manu Prem offers remedial education and coaching for the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) Board Examinations. They have students between 6 and 19 years of age. They attend clases from Pre-Primary to Senior Secondary (XII). At the 10th and 12th levels, they appear for the NIOS board exams.
They try to achieve holistic development by providing ‘personalized education’ which focusses on scholastic development, personality development, imparting values and teaching life skills.
Students are offered a plethora of extra-curricular activities such as yoga, judo & gymnastics, sports activities, dance, drama, art & craft and cooking. They can also undertake a psycho-educational assessment, avail the services of a Child Psychiatrist, Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist and Clinical Psychologist, all of whom are part of the school’s faculty.

A special Individualized Education Program (IEP) that includes academic and social goals is specifically formulated for each child. Each student’s individual program is evaluated every term. Based on the IEP, they custom design teaching methods for each child and also employ specific remedial measures to address their unique difficulties

Inclusive education facility at Springdales school.

Inclusive Education is a term used to describe a system of education that seeks to welcome children with special needs and include them in the mainstream. The philosophy of the programme highlights the principle that all children, regardless of their abilities have the right to be educated and be a part of the integrated school system.
At Springdales, Dhaula Kuan, the Inclusive Education Programme has been functional for the past four years and aims at bringing out the potential of each child. It helps those children who are unable to cope with heightened academic pressure by providing them a platform to nurture their talents, work creatively, and establish meaningful relationships and live with self-confidence.

At Springdales, Pusa Road, students with Dyslexia, ADD, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and physically challenged children are currently enrolled as a part of our inclusive education programme. Special ramps have been constructed all over the school for easy mobility. Along with the special needs educator and the two school counselors all the teachers have been oriented towards inclusive schooling.
July, 2006 saw the establishment of a new inclusive education centre with trained teachers and state-of-the-art equipment. Highly successful with Miss Sonali Bose as the coordinator, the Centre follows individualized curricular for visually and hearing impaired students, as well as those with dyslexia, attention deficit disorder and autism. Freedom and flexibility is provided for all children to progress at their own pace.
As part of Community service, the students of classes XI and XII are allotted periods in which they act as guides and mentors. There is regular interaction between parents, teachers and the coordinator during which educational goals are set up and an assessment system involved.
Appropriately named “Saath-Saath” the special needs centre caters to both skill and intellectual development.

Learning Centre facility at Sanskriti School.

Learning Centre has been an integral part of the school since the school’s inception in 1998. The Centre caters to the needs of the students who, for socio- emotional or intellectual reasons are unable to keep pace with the formal system of education.
The centre provides training mainly through three mediums:
  1. Assistance for CBSE with exemptions
  2. National Open School
  3. Business Related Skills (Non academic, Pre- vocational)
The evaluation of the strength and ability of the student determines her/ his stream. The aim is to equip the children to reach their optimum level of potential. This is done through Individualized Educational Programs which are subject to constant evaluation and revision.
The Centre is child- centric but follows the system of inclusive education which means that the children are part of all the activities of the main stream school. A team of counselors, special educators and speech therapist facilitate the working of the Learning Centre.

Inclusive Education Facility at Bangalore International School [BIS].

One of the objectives of BIS is to provide inclusive education, wherein all students of the school, regardless of their strengths and weaknesses in any area, are a part of the school community. The Learning Centre team at Bangalore International School comprises 11 special educators, a speech therapist, a physiotherapist and a developmental therapist. We believe in educating children with special needs in a mainstream school.

They offer inclusive educational placement along a continuum of partial to full general classroom placement depending on the individual need of the student. All children belong to a mainstream class and participate with their mainstream peers in academics, co-curricular and extracurricular activities to the maximum extent.

Students with specific learning difficulties are offered support in the Learning Centre for specific curriculum based remediation, for example, in spelling, in reading, in arithmetic and in comprehension. Some students follow an adapted curriculum which is formulated according to their present level of academic functioning. Students with speech difficulty, in language and communication follow an intensive speech therapy programme, whilst those with motor and coordination difficulties are assisted by the physio/developmental therapist.

In all their endeavours, the focus is on the individual child. So They design a child centered program flexible enough to meet each child's academic, socio-emotional and behavioral needs, thereby ensuring the holistic development of the child.

To increase awareness and sensitivity towards the varied needs of some of their students, their special educators conduct sensitization sessions for teachers, parents, students and support staff. The Learning Centre faculty attend workshops to gain more knowledge of prevalent practices in Inclusive Education and to share professional experiences, thus keeping themselves updated in the field of Special Education.

The Heritage School has an Inclusive School where children of varied backgrounds and learning abilities are encouraged to develop their own talents and skill sets to flourish in life. Children with special needs diagnosed with learning disabilities and other developmental delays are given special care and attention they require.

Special needs children are included within the mainstream classroom to encourage them to develop social and interpersonal skills. They have qualified special educators who are trained to identify and help these special children learn and catch up with other students.

Their trained special educators conduct classes with the children in the remedial room where special attention is provided according to a need-based Programme. Heritage believe in designing learning Programme that suit the capabilities to each student. There is also a provision for the children to appear for the National Institute of Open Schooling Programme (NIOS)/OBE.

Patashala, aims to put back the smile on the face of a Child with learning difficulties. The cognitive and essential physical intervention therapy given here makes the children “learning-ready”, inculcating the right attitude towards receiving self enriching inputs from external sources.

They play a vital role in identifying and minimizing learning difficulties in children and thus help them to be more ready to learn at school. Our program includes REMEDIAL THERAPY and PEDIATRIC FITNESS EXERCISE to improve attention, understanding and retention of what is learned. Patashala helps them to achieve and enjoy better physical and mental well being. Children learn while they play here. The fun filled learning methods adopted here make the children relate with the institute and make them want to come back and learn here. Patashala focuses on motivating the children to exercise regularly and eat healthy food.

The objective of all their programme is to develop within each and every individual, the desire to learn, the confidence to speak and write, and ultimately becoming an independent learner.

Special remedial classes are held with individual attention and as small groups for learners who have learning difficulties. Students are also exposed to various learning techniques.

In their Patashala they offer a wide range of fitness, health instruction and after-school activities, to help children develop the knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors that lead to physical, mental, emotional, and social wellness.

Lata, who has a practical experience in training and molding special children, helps the children with various skills like reading, elementary maths, writing and language skills which are taught with the help of special aids developed by SLLC.The focus is on all-around development, with an emphasis on vocational training, to make the children self-sufficient. An IEP is prepared for each child taking consideration his/her learning style, strengths and needs.Children as young as kindergarten and as old as 17 or 20 can be assisted with this supplementary help.  Children studying in regular schools can attend the sessions after school and get assisted in their area of difficulty.
"A child facing any learning disability should always be given the benefit of doubt and should not be labelled as lazy, unmotivated or stupid. Instead the best way to help the child must be recognized," is Lata Lakshminarayanan's plea.

The Indian School of Excellence has been working with children having Learning Difficulties (slow learners, dyslexics, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and Behaviour Problems) for the last couple of years. Presently, the school is catering to almost 50 such students. Special educators assess the students, where their problem areas are identified. Then an individual programme is designed and implemented by the keeping the child in the mainstream classroom. The net result is development of self-confidence and improvement in academic performance.

With awareness in our society regarding learning problems, the work done by the Indian school of Excellence is commendable and will go along way in helping these children in overcoming their problems.
